  • Personal Statement/Experience:
    • “My boss was telling me why she’s not inviting me for another interview … and she was telling me how I’m not going to be invited because—I don’t have enough skills, obviously, which is ridiculous, because I DO have those skills, but that’s not the point. Her comment is ‘But your English is so good.’ I told her I speak three languages, like ‘Oh yeah, but ymour English is so wonderful.’ Like, ‘Thank you,’ but [laughs] … It’s such a paper-cut microaggression kind of stuff. I came to apply for a leadership position and she’s telling me ‘Your English is good. (FG)” (Kubota et al., 2021)
    • “I went to a large apartment complex in Philadelphia to inquire about apartments. I was steered to the most expensive apartment in the building and told that this was the only apartment available for the following month and that no other apartments would be coming available. However, the next day, using my very best Standard American English on the phone and inquiring about apartments at the same complex, I discovered that, miraculously, several less expensive apartments were immediately available, and I was more than welcome to come and see them.”
    • “Of course, as soon as my mother said the words, Principal Evans started talking to me like I was a turkey. ‘Reaaaalllly. Woooow. Hoooowwwwdoooo youuuu likkke thissss couuuuuntrrrrry?’ she asked. ‘I really like it,’ I quickly answered. Principal Evans put her hand to her chest and exhaled in relief. ‘You know English! Oh, that’s great. I have to admit, we don’t get too many Chinese kids here. There’s only one other Chinese kid in fifth grade.”(Cushing & Carter, 2022)
